It's easy to overlook the silent battles fought by those around us - whether they’re veterans, emergency responders, or volunteers who dedicate their time to the greater good. Many don't wake up and spontaneously decide that life is no longer worth living. Instead, they endure a slow, painful process of emotional attrition - what is commonly referred to as the "death by a thousand cuts."
For those that don't know, Tango Kilo Mike is a charity deeply committed to reducing suicide among serving and ex-service personnel. Our mission is rooted in the belief that with the right options and support, suicide should never feel like the only way out. Through tailored strategies that prioritise empowerment, connection, and practical solutions, we aim not just to prevent tragedy but to create opportunities for individuals to thrive.
We provide pathways to meaningful employment, fostering resilience, and building supportive communities, we seek to transform lives and restore hope for those put their lives on the line for us. Unlike other mental health organisations, we don't wait for crisis to occur, we aim to prevent them. We are not another "ambulance at the bottom of the cliff".
This post shines a light on the systemic issues that exacerbate these struggles and highlights what we’re doing about it in more detail.
1. The Weight of a Thousand Cuts
No one reaches a point of despair in a single moment. Life often deals a series of small, accumulating blows - disappointments, stresses, and the sense of being unheard or unsupported. These incremental cuts gradually erode resilience, leading to decisions that may seem sudden to others but, in reality, are the result of a long journey of pain. Recognising and addressing this process early could make a lifesaving difference.
2. A Unique Definition of Veterans in New Zealand
Unlike many countries, New Zealand's definition of "veteran" is unusually narrow, potentially excluding many individuals who have served honourably in the military. This restrictive definition leaves a significant number without access to the support systems they need, diminishing their ability to recover and thrive post-service.
3. The Gaps in Our Health System (ACC)
New Zealand's Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) takes a rigid stance on what it considers compensable. Stress, emotional challenges, or injuries resulting from cumulative trauma are largely excluded unless tied to a single, identifiable event or activity. For military personnel or emergency responders, whose experiences are often cumulative, this exclusion leaves them without crucial support. This oversight is not just a gap - it’s a chasm.
4. Employment Law: When the Job Ends, Support Often Ends Too
New Zealand employment law permits employers to dismiss employees who are unable to work due to illness or injury, provided that certain legal processes are followed. However, it’s often easier (or cheaper) for employers to sever employment ties than to address and treat the underlying causes of these conditions. This can leave employees feeling abandoned and disconnected when they’re at their most vulnerable.
5. Volunteers: The Unseen Workforce in Crisis
Some essential services heavily rely on volunteers, creating a grey area in employment protections. Volunteers often don't qualify for the same rights and protections as paid employees, leaving them without recourse if they experience injuries or emotional trauma. This loophole leaves a critical gap in our support systems, exposing dedicated individuals to undue risk and hardship.
6. Cost of Living Crisis and Financial Management Challenges
New Zealand is grappling with a cost-of-living crisis that compounds the challenges faced by veterans and emergency responders. Rising expenses can exacerbate feelings of stress and uncertainty, particularly for those already vulnerable or struggling. Poor financial management or a lack of access to resources can magnify these issues, creating a ripple effect that impacts mental health, stability, and overall well-being.
Our Call to Action – Pathfinder Programme
The challenges faced by veterans, emergency responders, and volunteers are profound - but not insurmountable. We have developed frameworks that genuinely understand and support these individuals, empowering them to lead fulfilling lives. We call this ourPathfinder Programme.
At the heart of this support system lies meaningful, paid employment. It’s not just about the job itself - it’s about what the job represents. Employment provides mana, or dignity, the ability to support oneself and one’s family, keep a roof overhead, and feel valued and connected to society. It creates opportunities to contribute meaningfully and offer a helping hand to others who are walking similar paths.
This understanding is central to the Pathfinder Programme, which we’ve designed to provide tangible, actionable support for veterans and those in similar circumstances.
The program includes:
· Access to highly skilled coaches who guide individuals toward finding their next best career move.
· Professional level digital training to help craft polished CVs and cover letters that reflect the skills and potential of participants.
· Strategic recruitment partnerships to open doors and opportunities tailored for ex-service personnel.
· Resources on addressing emotional challenges, empowering individuals to recognise and navigate their struggles.
· Peer-support activities, including martial arts, fostering community connection and resilience.
· Financial literacy training through our strategic partnership with Westpac, enabling individuals to learn strategies for reducing debt and planning effectively for financial goals. This critical addition helps participants build a secure financial foundation, reducing stress and increasing independence.
Our Pathfinder Programme reflects the belief that every person has the right to feel valued and to belong. It’s not just a programme - it’s a lifeline, a bridge, and a foundation for hope.
We invite others to join this movement, and reimagine what effective support systems can be. Together we can create a future where no one falls through the cracks - a future defined by compassion, dignity, and unwavering solidarity.
